Racism is something we need to work on here in America. With an almost three year old (and one of the way), I wanted to make myself aware of the ways that I can teach my kids, show my kids and grow with my kids.
These are some resources that I have found to be very helpful for my family and I hope that they will help your family start new conversations.
- Children’s lives are touched by trauma on a regular basis, no matter how much parents or teachers try to keep the “bad things” away. Instead of shielding children from the dangers, violence or tragedies around us, adults should talk to kids about what is happening. Follow this website for more ways to talk to your kids about difficult news.
- Parents.com provided a great breakdown of How to Teach Your Kids to Fight Hate: An Age-by-Age Guide.
- If you are looking for an easier way to start the conversation, or help you guide the conversation you can always look to books. Today’s Parents put together a list of 27 books to help you talk to your kids about racism. You can view the list here.
- The Diverse BookFinder is a comprehensive collection of children’s picture books featuring Black and Indigenous people and People of Color (BIPOC). Find more books and resources here.
